COMENIUS project

"Stolpersteine" - "Stumbling Blocks"

"Stumbling Blocks" in Krefeld

In commemoration of the Jews, Roma, Socialists and other Nazi victims who were deported and killed during the Third Reich, German artist Gunter Demnig created so-called "Stolpersteine".
In English: "Stumbling blocks". Stolpersteine are cubic concrete blocks with brass plaques on top that are engraved with the names of individual Nazi victims. They are layed right before the former home of the person they remind of.

In Krefeld nearly 800 people were killed by the Nazis. Today 41 Stolpersteine / Stumbling Blocks remind of 41 of these victims of Nazi terror.

Students of Tucholsky Comprehensive made this project come true in Krefeld. In 2005 they asked the city council for permission to lay Stolpersteine in Krefeld. When a majority of the council said "No" the students started a referendum, asking the citizens of Krefeld whether they wanted Stolpersteine in their city or not.

In the end more than 13.000 citizens of Krefeld gave the students of Tucholsky Comprehensive School a "yes" and the project became reality in 2007. It was probably the biggest student project ever carried out in the city of Krefeld.

All COMENIUS guests have been acquainted with this important commemoration project. The Finnish guests have created works of art after seeing some of  the Krefeld Stumbling blocks and learning about the biographies of former Krefeld citizens who were murdered by the Nazis.

The following files tell about some of the victims (English):

School clothes at Tucholsky School

KTG School Clothes (t-shirt)...

It's been an idea of the student council to offer school clothes at our school - no uniforms, of course, but sweat shirts, hoodies, t-shirts and other gear that looks cool. For that purpose we wanted a school logo to be stitched on
the clothes. So in fall 2009 the student council started a competition, asking all students for their suggestions. The best two logo ideas were then published and the student council held a referendum among all students and teachers (foto above). The sunflower logo including the European stars and letters "KTG" (the abbreviation of our school's name) won. In spring 2010 we introduced the first school clothes at KTG...

"Querungshilfe Nauenweg"

The most demanding part of our project here in Krefeld is about traffic. Right next to our school students coming from Western directions have to cross a very busy road. In order to get things changed students of KTG wrote several petitions to the city council, asking for a safe crossing ("Querungshilfe").

One of the petitions

Art classes designed protest posters that were used during the campaign for safer traffic conditions. Here are some of the results. Very professionally done!

During the International COMENIUS Student Meeting held in Krefeld in April 2011 guests from our partner schools joined students from KTG marching to town hall. There fifty students from all over Europe gave a stunning performance in the presence of many local politicians, amongst them the Mayor of Krefeld. The following photos give an idea of that unprecedented show:

"Querungshilfe Nauenweg" has not been built yet. Obviously it's all a matter of money... We keep working on it!

International Student Meeting in Krefeld

In April 2011 thirty students and teachers came to Krefeld for an International Student Meeting. The entire week was dedicated to one issue: Active Citizenship!

We planned and carried out a protest march (see above), visited town hall, spoke to the mayor of Krefeld, went to Düsseldorf to visit the parliament of the federal state of Nordrhein-Westfalen and met a member of parliament who is an expert on European matters. Here is one of the fotos taken in the course of that awesome week in Krefeld:

The future of the EU - A Questionnaire

We developed a questionnaire on the future of the EU, asking students from all participating schools and countries to tell us about their attitudes towards Europe. The results were quite surprising. We took them along when we met a member of NRW parliament who is an expert on European issues and had a very interesting disussion about it. Here are the results:

COMENIUS and the local press

The local newspapers covered our project several times. COMENIUS also served as a great public realtions campaign, as the following two copies of newspaper articles show:

Evaluation

The file linked up below displays some of the answers KTG students gave when they were asked about their personal COMENIUS experience. According to their age and achievement level their English may not be perfect. No matter! The students' responses show that our project was worth all the money, the physical and the intellectual energy it consumed!
